Rise to Stardom
Yael Cohen has been mostly known as one of the most creative and powerful women in the field of business and philanthropy for featuring on several prestigious publications. She has also been in the news for some time due to her marriage to music manager Scooter Braun and has been spotted in the company of his high-profile clients many times. However, it is the controversy regarding the rights of pop singer Taylor Swift’s early albums that put the spotlight directly on her as she revealed in her Instagram post the truths behind Swift’s claims and accusations against her husband.
Family & Personal Life
Yael Cohen was born on November 5, 1986 into a South African Jewish family in South Africa. She was raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, where her parents moved later. She attended Collingwood School in West Vancouver, British Columbia and received her bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of British Columbia in 2008.
Yael Cohen had been dating Scooter Braun for about a year before marrying him on July 6, 2014 in Whistler, British Columbia, following a 6-month engagement. They announced on August 27, 2014 that they were expecting their first child together. She subsequently gave birth to son Jagger Joseph Braun on February 6, 2015 in Los Angeles. Their second son, Levi Magnus Braun, was born on November 29, 2016. The couple welcomed their third child, daughter Hart Violet Braun, on December 1, 2018.
Controversies & Scandals
Yael Cohen recently earned media attention as she made an Instagram post on July 1, 2019, defending her husband, Scooter Braun, from pop singer Taylor Swift’s accusations against him in a letter posted on Tumblr on June 30, 2019. On that day, it was announced that Braun’s company Ithaca Holdings had acquired Scott Borchetta’s Big Machine Label Group in a $300 million deal that gave him rights to Swift’s first six albums. Scooter Braun had been Swift’s manager for years, and in her lengthy letter, Swift had claimed that he had bullied her throughout her career, adding that “Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy.”
While many celebrities from the music industry supported Swift, others like Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato, and Erik Logan came to Braun’s support. Borchetta himself accused Swift of “misrepresenting the truth”, lying, and being “the real bully” for venting out on social media. Yael Cohen opened up about the issue under such circumstances and took a dig at Taylor Swift stating she doesn’t support “public airing of laundry”. She also called her out for her social media tantrum saying, “You are supposed to be a role model but continue to model bullying.” She also set “facts straight” by mentioning that Swift was “given the opportunity to own your masters”, but passed.
As Swift also put the blame on Braun for her feud with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, Cohen blamed her stating she hated him because “Kim caught you in a lie”. She even offered her a look at “what happens behind closed doors”, mentioning that Braun believed in her more than Swift believed in herself and urged her to “love and believe in yourself the way my husband does.” Yael Cohen told Taylor Swift to control her fans bullying Braun if she truly thought that he had any control in his clients’ lives, asking her to “have the dignity, class and kindness to leave your fans out of this” considering their young kids. Finally, she finished stating, “Tumblr can’t fix this, a phone call can.” While she also added that she was ready to “talk privately anytime”, it has been reported that Swift did not take Braun’s call. So far, her scathing post has been liked by celebrities such as Kendall Jenner, Jenna Dewan, Kacey Musgraves, and Demi Lovato.
