He was influential in the cooperative, trade union, and Chartist movements, as well as on Karl Marx. Thompson attempted to will his estate to the cooperative movement, resulting in a court case. His ideas were shaped by a visit to the Ralahine Commune, and he was recognized as the “first Irish socialist” by Marxist James Connolly. Thompson’s work had a significant impact on Marx and his ideology.
