William Rufus DeVane King was a distinguished American politician and diplomat who served as the 13th Vice President of the United States. Throughout his career, he held important political roles such as U.S. Representative from North Carolina, Senator from Alabama, and Minister to France under President James K. Polk. King, a Democrat and Unionist, was recognized for his moderate positions on sectionalism, slavery, and westward expansion. He played a significant part in formulating the Compromise of 1850. Unfortunately, King’s time as Vice President was brief, as he passed away from tuberculosis only 45 days after assuming the position.
