William Lyon Mackenzie, a prominent journalist and politician of Scottish descent, established newspapers that were critical of the Family Compact in Upper Canada. He represented York County in the Legislative Assembly and was aligned with the Reformers. Mackenzie led the rebels in the Upper Canada Rebellion, although he faced challenges in implementing his policy objectives despite his popularity for criticizing government officials. Seeking American support for an invasion of Upper Canada ultimately led to his arrest and imprisonment. After being granted amnesty in 1849, Mackenzie returned to Canada and continued his political career by serving in the provincial legislature.
