William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, was a British Whig politician who held positions as Home Secretary and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. His first term as Prime Minister came to an end in 1834 after being dismissed by King William IV. He was re-appointed five months later and served for an additional six years into Queen Victoria’s reign. Melbourne is most recognized for advising Queen Victoria on political matters and serving as her private secretary. However, his tenure as Prime Minister was overshadowed by political scandals and a lack of notable accomplishments in foreign or domestic policy.
