William Glackens was an American realist painter and a prominent figure in the Ashcan School movement. He challenged conventional artistic norms established by the National Academy of Design and concentrated on depicting ordinary life in New York and Paris. Glackens was instrumental in procuring European artworks for the Barnes Foundation. While he first gained recognition for his somber urban scenes, his later pieces were inspired by Renoir and incorporated more vibrant colors. In addition to his painting endeavors, Glackens served as an illustrator for several newspapers and magazines in Philadelphia and New York City.
