Vladimir Valeryevich Salnikov, a Russian former freestyle swimmer, gained fame for setting 12 world records in the 400, 800, and 1,500-meter events. He was nicknamed the “Tsar of the Pool,” “Monster of the Waves,” and “Leningrad Express,” and made history by becoming the first to swim the 1,500m freestyle in under fifteen minutes and the 800m freestyle in under eight minutes. Salnikov was recognized as the Male World Swimmer of the Year in 1979 and 1982 by Swimming World Magazine.
