Richard Terrance McDermott, known as The Essexville Rocket, was an accomplished Olympic speed skater who excelled in the 500m race. He surprised many by winning gold at the 1964 Winter Olympics and went on to have a successful international career, competing in multiple Winter Games. McDermott was also inducted into the National Speedskating Hall of Fame and later represented the judges at the 1980 Winter Olympics. He balanced his athletic career with work as a barber and a manufacturer’s representative while also serving as a speed skating official.
