Sylvia Rivera, a prominent American activist, was known for her significant contributions to the gay liberation and transgender rights movements in New York City. Together with Marsha P. Johnson, she co-founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) to assist homeless drag queens, gay youth, and transgender women.
