Suzanne Farrell is a highly regarded American ballerina who founded the Suzanne Farrell Ballet at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. She began her ballet training in Cincinnati and earned a scholarship to the School of American Ballet in 1960. Known as a muse of George Balanchine, Farrell held leading roles in the early 1960s and danced for Maurice Bejart’s Ballet of the 20th Century before working closely with Balanchine until his passing in 1983. After retiring in 1989, she has taught at various ballet schools and institutions, such as the New York City Ballet and Florida State University. Farrell has been recognized with numerous awards and honors for her significant contributions to the ballet world, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
