Stepan Osipovich Makarov was a Russian vice-admiral and commander in the Imperial Russian Navy, renowned for his advancements in naval technology and strategy. He pioneered insubmersibility theory and created a Cyrillic-based semaphore alphabet. Makarov oversaw the building of the first polar icebreaker and crafted multiple ship designs. He participated in the Russo-Turkish War and the Russo-Japanese War, where his leadership was praised for being skilled and aggressive. Tragically, Makarov met his end in battle when his flagship hit a naval mine and exploded.
