Shields Green, an escaped slave from Charleston, South Carolina, emerged as a key figure in John Brown’s historic raid on Harpers Ferry in 1859. Residing in Rochester, New York, Green was introduced to Brown by Frederick Douglass. Despite surviving the raid, he faced trial, conviction, and eventual execution by hanging.
