He was the secretary-general of the opposition Civic United Front (CUF) party before becoming First Vice President of Zanzibar. In 2019, he left CUF and joined the Alliance for Change and Transparency (ACT Wazalendo), where he was appointed Party Chairman. Hamad was a notable figure in Tanzanian politics and was chosen as the presidential candidate for Zanzibar in 2020.
