Samuel Alito Jr. is an American jurist who has been serving as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court since 2006. Nominated by President George W. Bush, he is the second Italian American justice on the Court. Alito was raised in New Jersey and educated at Princeton University and Yale Law School. Prior to his current position, he has held various roles including in the Office of Legal Counsel, as U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, and as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Alito is known as a “practical originalist” and a member of the Court’s conservative bloc, having authored significant majority opinions in cases such as McDonald v. Chicago, Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, Janus v. AFSCME, and Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
