Salva Kiir Mayardit is a South Sudanese politician known for his leadership roles, including President of the Government of Southern Sudan, First Vice President of Sudan, and President of South Sudan since its independence in 2011. He became Commander-in-Chief of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) in 2005 after the passing of John Garang. Kiir initially joined rebel groups fighting for Southern independence during civil wars and later rose to lead the SPLA, playing a crucial part in the autonomy and eventual independence of South Sudan.
