Sally Yates is an American lawyer who held various positions in the United States Department of Justice. She served as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia from 2010 to 2015 and was appointed as the United States Deputy Attorney General in 2015 by President Barack Obama. Yates briefly served as the Acting Attorney General in 2017 but was dismissed by President Trump for insubordination after refusing to defend Executive Order 13769. After her dismissal, she returned to private practice and was considered a candidate for Attorney General in the Biden administration.
