Rudi Dutschke was a German sociologist and political activist who played a key role in the Socialist Students Union (SDS) in West Germany and the wider “extra-parliamentary opposition” movement. He rejected Leninist party dictatorship and West German social democracy, instead advocating for direct democracy and alternative social and political structures. Dutschke supported Third World liberation struggles and later adopted a patriotic socialist stance, encouraging the left to address the national question and pursue a bloc-free path to German reunification. He was also involved in the founding congress of the Green party before his passing in 1979.
