Rose O’Neill was a pioneering American cartoonist, illustrator, artist, and writer famous for creating the beloved comic strip characters, Kewpies, in 1909. As the first published female cartoonist in the United States, she achieved great success with her Kewpie dolls, which became one of the first mass-marketed toys in the country. O’Neill also authored novels and poetry, and actively participated in the women’s suffrage movement. Her remarkable contributions to the world of art and illustration led to her induction into the National Women’s Hall of Fame and the Eisner Awards Hall of Fame.
