Roger B. Chaffee was an American naval officer, aviator, and aeronautical engineer who joined the NASA astronaut program during the Apollo era. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from Purdue University in 1957 and then underwent Navy training. Chaffee held various positions in the Navy and served as a pilot flying different types of aircraft. In 1963, he was chosen as an astronaut and later worked as a CAPCOM for Gemini missions. Unfortunately, Chaffee lost his life during the Apollo 1 pre-launch test in 1967.
