Robert Edwin Peary Sr. was an American explorer and naval officer renowned for his Arctic expeditions during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He undertook numerous journeys to the Arctic region and asserted to have reached the North Pole in 1909. Peary also played a role in surveying for the Nicaragua Canal and achieved a record for the northernmost point in Greenland.
