Robert Gould Shaw served as a Union Army officer during the Civil War and led the first all-black regiment in the Northeast, the 54th Massachusetts. He fought for equal treatment and pay for his troops and led them in the Second Battle of Fort Wagner, where he displayed exceptional leadership before losing his life. Shaw’s leadership and the bravery of his regiment inspired many African Americans to enlist, making a significant contribution to the Union’s victory in the war.
