Richard Sorge, a German journalist and Soviet military intelligence officer known by the codename “Ramsay,” worked undercover in Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan during World War II. He supplied vital intelligence to the Soviets, such as details on Hitler’s plan to attack the Soviet Union and Japan’s stance towards the USSR. Despite facing arrest, torture, and execution for espionage in Japan, Sorge’s efforts significantly supported the Soviet war campaign. In 1964, he was posthumously recognized as a Hero of the Soviet Union.
