Richard Hakluyt was an English writer and ordained priest known for promoting English colonization of North America. He held important positions at Bristol Cathedral and Westminster Abbey, and played a key role in securing letters patent to colonize Virginia, granted to the Virginia Company in 1606. The Hakluyt Society was named after him for publishing scholarly editions of primary records of voyages and travels.
