Reginald Joseph Mitchell was a British aircraft designer who worked at Supermarine from 1916 to 1936. During his time there, he designed 24 aircraft, including racing seaplanes and the famous Spitfire. Mitchell began as an apprentice and later became Chief Engineer and Technical Director at Supermarine. He led the team that secured victory in the Schneider Trophy in 1931 with the Supermarine S.6B. Despite facing cancer, Mitchell remained dedicated to his work, even obtaining his pilot’s license in 1934. He passed away in 1937.
