Phineas P. Gage gained notoriety as an American railroad construction foreman who survived a serious accident in which an iron rod penetrated his head, causing damage to his left frontal lobe. This incident resulted in a significant shift in his personality and behavior for the next 12 years. Gage’s case prompted debates in the 19th century regarding the connection between the brain and personality, challenging established physiological theories. While there were some exaggerations in the accounts of his conduct, it was believed that Gage’s cognitive changes showed signs of improvement over time, particularly during his employment as a stagecoach driver in Chile.
