He held the position of Professor of Phonetics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) from 1962 to 1991. Ladefoged, in collaboration with Ian Maddieson, authored The Sounds of the World’s Languages, a respected reference in phonetics. Additionally, he focused on the phonetics of African languages in his publications and had teaching roles at universities in Scotland and Nigeria before joining UCLA.
