Patricia Joen Cooksey, known as P.J. Cooksey, is a retired American jockey renowned for her achievements in Thoroughbred racing. With over 2,100 wins since starting her career in 1979, she was a leading rider at Turfway Park and held the title of all-time leading female jockey in victories until surpassed by Julie Krone. Cooksey made history as the first female jockey to compete in the Preakness Stakes in 1985. She received prestigious honors like the NYRA’s Mike Venezia Memorial Award for sportsmanship and citizenship. Despite a career-ending injury in 2003, Cooksey remained involved in racing as a commentator and reporter for television stations and ESPN.
