Gregory “Pappy” Boyington, an American combat pilot and US Marine Corps fighter ace in World War II, was awarded the Medal of Honor and Navy Cross for his courageous actions in combat. He served with the “Flying Tigers” in Burma before returning to the Marine Corps, where he led the fighter squadron VMF-214, famously known as the “Black Sheep.” Boyington was shot down by Japanese aircraft, captured as a prisoner of war, and later released. His wartime experiences served as the inspiration for the television series Baa Baa Black Sheep.
