Pancho Barnes, a pioneering aviator, broke Amelia Earhart’s air speed record in 1930. She founded the first movie stunt pilots’ union and participated in the Women’s Air Derby. Barnes was also a member of the Ninety-Nines, a group of female pilots. Later on, she owned the Happy Bottom Riding Club, a well-known bar and restaurant in the Mojave Desert that was a popular hangout for legendary test pilots and aviators from Southern California.
