Pinckney Benton Stewart Pinchback was an American publisher, politician, and Union Army officer who made history as the first African American governor of a U.S. state. Serving as acting governor of Louisiana for 35 days, he was a prominent figure in politics during the Reconstruction Era. Pinchback also played a pivotal role in challenging the segregation of Louisiana’s public transportation system, which ultimately led to the landmark Supreme Court case of Plessy v. Ferguson.
