Mumia Abu-Jamal is an American political activist and journalist known for his work on the criminal justice system in the United States. He was convicted of murder in 1982 but had his death penalty sentence overturned in 2011 to life imprisonment without parole. Abu-Jamal was a member of the Black Panther Party and later became a radio reporter. He served as president of the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists and supported MOVE, covering a confrontation involving the organization in 1978. Abu-Jamal has published books and commentaries on social and political issues during his imprisonment.
