Morihei Ueshiba was a Japanese martial artist who founded the martial art of aikido. He studied various martial arts, served in the Japanese Army, and trained with Takeda Sōkaku in Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu. Ueshiba later joined the Ōmoto-kyō movement, where he worked as a martial arts instructor and opened his first dojo. He went on to establish the Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Tokyo and became well-known in martial arts circles for teaching aikido extensively in Japan and internationally until his passing in 1969.
