Millard Fillmore, a self-educated lawyer from Buffalo, New York, gained recognition as an attorney and politician. He held positions in the New York Assembly, U.S. House of Representatives, and ultimately became the 13th president of the United States. As a member of the Whig Party, Fillmore was instrumental in the passage of the Compromise of 1850 during his presidency. Despite criticism for his slavery policies, he continued to engage in civic affairs after leaving office.
