Michael Chertoff is an American attorney who served as the second United States Secretary of Homeland Security under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. He co-authored the USA PATRIOT Act and previously worked as a United States circuit judge, federal prosecutor, and Assistant U.S. Attorney General. Chertoff succeeded Tom Ridge as Secretary of Homeland Security in 2005. After leaving government, he co-founded the Chertoff Group, a risk-management and security consulting company, and worked at the law firm Covington & Burling. Chertoff is involved in various organizations focusing on freedom and democracy.
