Matthias Grünewald(German Renaissance Painter)

Birthdate: 1470 AD
Birthplace: Würzburg, Germany
Died: August 31, 1528
Matthias Grünewald, a German Renaissance painter, was renowned for his religious works. He broke away from Renaissance classicism in favor of the late medieval Central European art style. His surviving works, which include polyptychs and drawings, predominantly feature religious subjects. Unfortunately, many of his pieces were lost at sea on their way to Sweden. Grünewald remained relatively obscure until the late 19th century, when his works were mistakenly attributed to Albrecht Dürer. One of his most celebrated creations is the Isenheim Altarpiece, completed between 1512 and 1516.
