Martin Bucer, a German Protestant reformer, played a significant role in shaping Lutheran, Calvinist, and Anglican doctrines. Originally a Dominican monk, he renounced his vows upon meeting Martin Luther and was later excommunicated from the Catholic Church for his reform efforts in Wissembourg. Seeking refuge in Strasbourg, Bucer collaborated with other reformers and mediated between Luther and Zwingli on Eucharist doctrine. He also worked on common articles of faith with the goal of uniting Protestants and Catholics within a German national church. Bucer’s exile to England allowed him to influence religious texts and establish himself as an early ecumenist.
