Maria Butina is a Russian politician and former entrepreneur who was convicted in 2018 for acting as an unregistered foreign agent of Russia in the US. She worked as an assistant for Aleksandr Torshin, a former member of the Federation Council and deputy governor of the Central Bank of Russia. Butina aimed to infiltrate conservative groups, including the NRA, to promote Russian interests in the 2016 US presidential election. After her arrest, she pleaded guilty to felony charges and served time in prison before being deported back to Russia in 2019. In 2021, she was elected to the State Duma as a member of United Russia.
