Margaret Atieno Ogola was a renowned Kenyan Catholic novelist celebrated for works such as The River and the Source and its sequel, I Swear by Apollo. In addition to her literary achievements, she also excelled as a pediatrician and served as the medical director of Cottolengo Hospice, a facility dedicated to caring for HIV and AIDS orphans. Ogola received critical acclaim throughout her writing career, with her debut novel earning the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for best first book in the Africa Region. Her impactful contributions to literature continued with her final book, Mandate of the People, which she completed before her passing.
