Madame Nhu, also known as Trần Lệ Xuân, played a prominent role as the de facto First Lady of South Vietnam from 1955 to 1963. She was married to Ngô Đình Nhu, the brother and chief advisor to President Ngô Đình Diệm. Madame Nhu resided in Independence Palace with Diệm and was considered the first lady due to his unmarried status. She became well-known for her staunch opposition to anti-government protests and the U.S. presence in Vietnam. Following the assassinations of her husband and brother-in-law, Madame Nhu was exiled to France.
