Mackenzie Bowell, a Canadian newspaper publisher and politician, served as the fifth prime minister of Canada from 1894 to 1896. He started as an apprentice in a printing shop and later owned the Belleville Intelligencer. Bowell entered politics in 1867, holding ministerial roles under three prime ministers. His term as prime minister faced difficulties, notably with the Manitoba Schools Question, resulting in his resignation in 1896. Bowell remained a senator until his passing.
