Lloyd James Austin III is a retired United States Army four-star general who currently serves as the United States Secretary of Defense. Throughout his distinguished military career, he held prominent roles such as the 12th commander of United States Central Command, 33rd vice chief of staff of the Army, and commander of United States Forces – Iraq. Austin made history as the first African American to occupy these high-ranking positions. He possesses extensive combat experience in Iraq and Afghanistan, having commanded at various levels. In recognition of his service, Austin has been awarded the Silver Star and multiple Defense Distinguished Service Medals.
