Lisa Nowak is a former NASA astronaut and United States Navy officer with a background as a naval flight officer and test pilot. She was selected by NASA in 1996 and participated in the STS-121 mission aboard Space Shuttle Discovery in 2006, where she operated robotic arms. Nowak, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, holds advanced degrees in aeronautical engineering. Over the course of her Navy career, she accumulated more than 1,500 flight hours in various aircraft and received multiple military awards. However, she was later terminated by both NASA and the Navy due to criminal misconduct.
