Known for his leadership in the Underground Railroad in Indiana and Ohio, he helped around three thousand fugitive slaves to freedom. Coffin was a successful merchant and investor in the local bank before relocating to Cincinnati, where he operated a warehouse specializing in free-labor goods. He dedicated himself to aiding runaway slaves and established support organizations in France and Great Britain to further his anti-slavery efforts.
