He later faced legal troubles in Russia, where he was accused of plotting a coup d’état and illegally purchasing weapons. Despite nationwide attention and protests, Khabarov was sentenced to prison in 2013. He appealed to the Supreme Court of Russia but was rejected. In 2014, he was released on parole after serving time for his charges.
