Louis Patrick Gray III acted as the FBI director from May 1972 to April 1973. He played a role in the early stages of the Watergate scandal investigation, which eventually led to President Nixon’s resignation. Gray was nominated for the permanent director position by Nixon, but his confirmation by the Senate was unsuccessful. He later resigned after acknowledging the destruction of scandal-related documents. Gray remained silent about Watergate for over three decades until his identity was disclosed by FBI Deputy Director Mark Felt, famously known as “Deep Throat.”
