Julius Martov was a prominent Russian revolutionary, politician, and leader of the Menshevik faction of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party. He played a key role in co-founding the League of Struggle for the Emancipation of the Working Class and the party newspaper Iskra with Vladimir Lenin. Martov later led the Mensheviks against Lenin’s Bolsheviks after a schism in 1903. He returned to Russia following the February Revolution, where he opposed the Provisional Government and advocated for an “all-socialist” coalition government after the October Revolution. Martov also criticized the Soviet government’s repressive measures during the civil war and supported the fight against the Whites.
