Josia Thugwane is a South African retired long-distance runner best known for winning the gold medal in the marathon at the 1996 Summer Olympics. He made his international breakthrough by winning the Honolulu Marathon in 1995. Despite surviving a carjacking incident just before the Olympics, he went on to clinch a historic victory in Atlanta by narrowly beating his competitors. Thugwane continued to achieve success in marathons, winning the Fukuoka Marathon in 1997 and the Nagano Olympic Memorial Marathon in 2002.
