Joos van Cleve was a highly skilled Renaissance artist known for his religious subjects, portraits, and devotional paintings. He ran a successful workshop in Antwerp, producing numerous altarpieces and small devotional works distributed across Europe. His work reflected influences from Italian art and the Antwerp Mannerist style. Joos van Cleve’s portraits were highly regarded, leading to commissions from prominent figures such as King Francis I of France and possibly Henry VIII of England. He also contributed to the popularization of new devotional types, such as depictions of Saint Jerome.
