Johnny Horton, an American musician, was known for his narrative country saga songs inspired by history. His hit song “The Battle of New Orleans” from 1959 won a Grammy Award and was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Horton achieved his first No. 1 country song with “When It’s Springtime in Alaska (It’s Forty Below).” In 1960, he continued to see success with hits like “Sink the Bismarck” and “North to Alaska.” Tragically, Horton passed away in a traffic collision in November 1960 during the peak of his fame. He is remembered and honored in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.
