John Wellborn Root was an influential American architect known for his work in Chicago alongside Daniel Burnham. He played a key role in shaping the Chicago School style of architecture. Root designed several notable buildings, including the Rookery and the Reliance, which have been recognized as National Historic Landmarks. His architectural contributions have also been acknowledged through designations as Chicago landmarks and listings on the National Register of Historic Places. Root’s legacy was further cemented with a posthumous award of the AIA Gold Medal in 1958.
